Offshore grid expansion on Norderney
Transmission system operator Amprion is ensuring that the energy transition is making progress: construction work on two offshore lines that will bring electricity from North Sea wind farms to land began on the holiday island of Norderney in summer 2022. The three-part film series documents the construction of the offshore lines from the ground-breaking ceremony to drilling into the Wadden Sea. The first film shows the start of construction and allows experts, politicians and local residents to have their say:
How are offshore power cables actually laid? Amprion is using the horizontal directional drilling method to cross under Norderney. Experts from the transmission system operator explain exactly how this works and why the process is particularly environmentally friendly. Expressive images and animations visualise what is happening on and under the island:
The second horizontal drilling towards the south followed in summer 2023. The challenge: the drilling exit is located in the Wadden Sea. The construction work is therefore dependent on low and high tide. Protecting the extremely sensitive Wadden Sea is also a top priority. The film captures all of this in powerful images.
From the idea to the finished film: the film team and editorial team developed the concept, storyboard and key questions for the documentary series. The intensive planning of the shoot required special organisational skills due to the dependence on the construction window, nature conservation and volatile weather conditions. 3st accompanied the shoot over several days with the director, editor and camera team. The films are characterised in particular by their depth of content, their closeness to people and a consistent visual language.
